Training for Iditarod 2002

Al Hardman was born in Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI with a degree in Civil Engineering. In 1979 he developed Hardman Construction, Inc., of Ludington, MI and presently serves as CEO of the firm.
Al is also part owner of Amber Elk Ranch, which presently maintains approximately 150 adult elk and 50 new calves. They offer tours in the summer and shopping in the Amber Elk Gift Shop.

Al has trained and raced Alaskan sled dogs for ten years, completing the 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2004 Iditarod Races from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. He has chosen the best of the distance dogs in his kennel and perfected his feeding program as well, giving him confidence for the 2004 Iditarod. In the past two Iditarod Races, he accepted pledges for The Leader Dog School for the Blind in Rochester, MI. In cooperation with the Ludington Lions Club Al was able to raise over $20,000 in pledges and donations for the Leader Dog School for the Blind. In 2002, Al ran purely for the challenge the race offers, and to better his 2000 Iditarod-37th place finish time of 11 days, 11 hours and 32 minutes. He did so with a 21st place finish in 10 days, 4 hours and 20 minutes! In 2004 Al did not fare as well as his previous runs, due to a severe virus that went through his team. Al spent more time at rest with the team to allow them to recover, which pushed his finish time well past his original expectations. But he and his dogs would not quit, and he finished 2004 Iditarod with a healthy, happy team!

Al is married, has five children, seven grandchildren and currently 43 sled dogs.
